معركة واترلو
The Emperor Napoleon at Waterloo
معركة وقعت بين القوات الفرنسية بقيادة نابليون بونابرت وقوات التحالف بقيادة دوق ولنجتون ، وهي آخر المعارك التي خاضها نابليون واجهضت حلمه في حكم كامل أوروبا.
بعد تنازل نابليون عن منصبه، نفي إلى جزيرة إلبا قبالة ساحل إيطاليا ، وأمضى هناك أقل من سنة، قبل أن يعود لحكم فرنسا، لأنه وجد أن الحلفاء في مؤتمر فيينا ، كانوا غير قادرين على تسوية خلافاتهم. وكان يأمل في أن يستغل هذا الشقاق لاستعادة السلطة.
ولكن الحلفاء تكاتفوا ضد نابليون لما سمعوا بعودته إلى فرنسا. وسار نابليون شمالا إلى بلجيكا ليواجه ذلك التهديد، وتولى دوق ولنجتون قيادة القوات المتحالفة لبلجيكا وبريطانيا وهانوفر وهولندا.
وقعت المعركة في 18 حزيران/يونيو عام 1815 في مدينة واترلو قرب بروكسل ، وكان عدد قوات نابليون 67 ألف جندي وسلاح فرسان وسلاح مدفعية كبيران، مما وضع قواته في موقع دفاعي قوي. وبدأ الفرنسيون هجوما ضاريا ضد خطوط الحلفاء غير أن قوات ولنجتون قاومت الهجوم الفرنسي.
كان يمكن لنابليون أن ينتصر في واترلو، لو أنه قام بالهجوم في وقت مبكر من النهار ولكنه انتظر حتى الظهر بسبب سقوط مطر غزير في الليلة السابقة، وسمح هذا التأخير للمارشال جبهارد فون بلوخر، أن يصل مع قواته البروسية لتعزيز قوات ولنجتون وكانت المعركة متعادلة حتى وصول قوات بلوخر، التي ساعدت في تحول المعركة لغير صالح الفرنسيين.
قام نابليون بآخر جهد ليكسب المعركة، فزج بأفضل قواته من قدامى الحرس إلى خطوط العدو لتتلقى هزيمة ساحقة وعندئذ انسحبت القوات الفرنسية لتتفادى هجوما مضادا من الطعن بالحراب.
فقد الجانبان كثيرا من الجنود في المعركة. وتكبد الفرنسيون حوالي 40 ألف جريح ، في حين كان جرحى الحلفاء حوالي 23 ألفا.
وبعد الهزيمة فشل نابليون في تجميع جيش جديد، ولم يكن أمامه من خيار سوى التنحي عن منصبه مرة ثانية، لينفى غلى جزيرة سانت هيلانة التي بقي فيها حتى توفي في العام 1821.
